Custom Blackout Drapes - Manhattan

In a lofted apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, light can be both a gift and a challenge. Expansive windows flood the space with natural light during the day, but when it’s time to rest, that same openness can make true darkness hard to achieve. For this project, the goal was clear: create a blackout solution that delivers exceptional sleep quality without disrupting the calm aesthetic of the home.

We designed and installed custom blackout drapes using a warm white fabric—carefully selected to blend seamlessly into the apartment’s palette. Rather than introducing contrast, the drapes softly disappear into the architecture, maintaining the airy, minimalist feel that defines many loft spaces. This is often the key in high-end interiors: performance without visual heaviness.

Functionality was just as important as aesthetics. The drapery system features two independent panels mounted on a slim ¾-inch traverse track. The low-profile hardware keeps the look clean and unobtrusive, while allowing each panel to operate separately. This gives the homeowner flexibility—panels can be stacked to one side, split evenly, or drawn to meet in the center depending on light control needs throughout the day.

To further optimize performance, we used a ripplefold style at 60% fullness. This choice was intentional. By minimizing fullness, the panels stack tighter when open, preserving more of the window view—an important consideration in a city like New York. At the same time, the ripplefold creates a smooth, tailored wave that feels modern and architectural.

Every detail was designed with sleep quality in mind. The drapes were fabricated to “kiss” the floor—just touching without breaking—reducing light leakage from below while maintaining a clean, precise line. Combined with proper returns and overlap, this helps create a darker environment, even in a bright urban setting.
