#1: Blackout Curtains

Having trouble getting baby to nap in the afternoon? Or is baby waking up with the first ray of lights in the early morning? Blackout drapes – they have a white blackout lining that does not let light through—are a great solution. They keep out daylight and block cold drafts or heat from leaking through the windows.

Blackout drapes are our top pick for the nursery our a child’s bedroom. To reduce further light coming in, we install them near the ceiling molding, high above the window frame. We recommend going 12″ more on each side on the width. We install the drapes with returns, to minimize light coming in though the side. This is why we believe a custom curtain is one of the best window treatment for the nursery.

For safety reasons, we recommend installing a traverse track with wands, and not cords. This ensures that your child will not play with the cords and risks to be tangled up. Having motorized drapes is another option.

#2: Custom Roller shades

Blackout shades are made from polyester that’s lined with a white blackout liner for improved insulation. These shades are great for children’s rooms because they don’t have any cords. We recommend our EZ Lift cordless option. Another option is to have a motorized shade.  The blackout fabric has a neutral street-side appearance to keep your house looking chic. Roller shades are easy to clean. Should your child have chocolate on their fingers, or play with crayons, warm water and mild soap will be sufficient to clean your shade.

We recommend mounting roller shades for the bedroom on the wall. They will let less light come through. Mount them 3″ above the frame, and go at least 1″ past the molding left and right. The fabric goes down on the back of the roller, therefore very close to the window itself. This minimizes the light gap.
