Fabric: Como Velvet

Custom Soundproof 3-layer drapes

Unlike typical curtains, soundproof curtains can help absorb quieter sounds while louder sounds will be muffled and less distracting. Soundproof drapes look similar to regular draperies that are installed in your home. Sound Control Custom Drapes also known as Noise Reduction or Acoustic Noise Canceling Drapes. The main difference is that they are made with different fabrics, in 3 layers.

Layer 1: Soundproof face fabric

Some materials are more effective than others to reduce outside noise. Heavyweight velvet is one of the best sound-insulating fabrics. The fibers are woven very tightly. Velvet also provides rich colors and a luxurious feeling. An alternative to velvet are triple-weave fabrics, with a raised texture. The way the fabric is woven creates tiny pockets on the surface, which help absorb the sound. This includes the fabrics from our Bukara sustainable cotton and recycled polyester fabric line.

In some room divider curtains, the goal is to reduce the noise coming from another part of a room. In this case, some clients ask for “self-lined” drapes. The same soundproof fabric is used in the front and in the back of the drapes.

Layer 2: Soundproof Liner

Not all drapery liners are made equal. For our soundprooof drapes, we use a special 3-pass heavyweight liner. This liner serves also as a thermal insulating liner, protecting your window from the heat and the cold. The liner is either blackout to make the room dark, or light filtering to have privacy while light still can come in. Our soundproof light filtering and blackout liners are “napped” liners. They are backed with a felt material, a similar feel to a soft flannel blanket.

Layer 3: Soundproof interLiner

Depending on the face fabric and the type of pleat selected, we add a 3rd layer of fabric, which is called an interliner. Similar in feel to a flannel blanket, interlining is an extra layer of fabric, usually cotton or a polyester cotton blend, placed between the main fabric and the lining. This extra layer increases the thickness of the drapes and therefore makes it more insulating. By adding a layer of interlining the ‘feel’ of the fabric can change dramatically and the curtains become thick and sumptuous, which we recommend when a thin face fabric (like a silk fabric) is used.

better sleep - better insulation

Soundproof curtains have many advantages. Besides the noise reducing effect, they have a thermal effect to better insulate your windows. If you choose a blackout liner, the room darkening effect will help you sleep better. This is especially important in a nursery. Thanks to our special liners and interliners, you do not have to compromise on the face fabric. You can choose from our wide line of beautiful fabrics, and create a beautiful interior with the fabric of your choice, while dramatically reducing the noise.
