This Living Room project in Woodcliff Lake, NJ is a beautiful blend of contemporary style and cozy elegance. The room is large, has high ceilings and a gorgeous stone fireplace.
The client recently updated the furniture and wanted to upgrade the window treatments. The room has excellent natural lighting, skylights and many windows with arches. Previously the client had cellular shades on the windows but wanted to elevate the design. Working with our KOPA Interior Designer, the client selected custom drapery panels.
When selecting custom curtains there are several factors to consider:
First Factor: Color. The room is large, has many windows, natural lighting, light colored walls and light colored furniture. Our designer recommended adding contrast with the drapes to highlight the windows. For this project, metallic silver gray drapery fabric was selected.
Second Factor: Texture and Pattern. Often in selecting drapes the question is asked: Should I go with solid fabric or a pattern fabric? Will patterns add to the design or take away from the design? In this room, a metallic and matte mix sponge pattern was the perfect choice. This pattern creates interest but is subtle.
Third Factor: Drapery Hardware. Opting for a silver metallic designer hardware with decorative finials was the perfect choice to match the drapery fabric. Because the fabric contrasts with the walls, having the hardware match the fabric creates a perfect framing of the windows.
Fourth Factor: Drapery Height and Mounting location: To keep with the clean lines created by the contrasting fabric color, the designer recommended mounting 18” above the window arches and stop just above the floor. Especially in rooms with high ceilings, mounting drapes 14” – 24” above the windows gives an elevated look.
Carefully selecting window coverings is important to updating and renovating a space. With natural lighting coming in the windows, the window treatments play a strong role in the overall ambiance in the room. By looking at the before and after photos for this Living Room, it is clear to see that contrasting drapery was an excellent choice!
