Best window treatment for the bedroom

Custom blackout drapes in bedroom

how to get a good night sleep

What is the best window treatments for the bedroom? Our advice here assumes that you want to make your bedroom dark. Keeping lights out of the bedroom is a key element of better sleep,. According to the Sleep Foundation: “Excess light exposure can throw off your sleep and circadian rhythm. Blackout curtains over your windows or a sleep mask for over your eyes can block light and prevent it from interfering with your rest.”

Here are our Top 3 window treatments to keep your bedroom dark:

#1: Blackout curtains

#2: Blackout roller shades – outside mount

#3: Blackout roman shades – outside mount

#1: Blackout Curtains

Having trouble sleeping because your room is too light? Blackout drapes – they have a white blackout lining that does not let light through—are a great solution. They keep out daylight and block cold drafts or heat from leaking through the windows.

Blackout drapes are our top pick to make a bedroom dark. To reduce further light coming in, we install them near the ceiling molding, high above the window frame. We recommend going 12″ more on each side on the width. We install the drapes with returns, to minimize light coming in though the side.

#2: Custom Roller shades

Custom roller shades are made from light-blocking polyester fabric for maximum light control and complete privacy.  They raise and lower evenly via a cordless lift system, via motor, or with a continuous chain loop. The blackout fabric has a neutral street-side appearance to keep your house looking chic.

We recommend mounting roller shades for the bedroom on the wall. They will let less light come through. Mount them 3″ above the frame, and go at least 1″ past the molding left and right. The fabric goes down on the back of the roller, therefore very close to the window itself. This minimizes the light gap.

#3: BLackout roman shades

For a more formal look for the bedroom, we recommend blackout roman shades to keep your bedroom dark. Roman shades use similar fabrics to drapery fabrics. They are luxurious, elegant and warm. They are lined with a white blackout liner. This makes them look consistent from outside.

You can order roman shades in various styles. We recommend a roman shade with a valance. The fabric will be closer to the window itself. It means that when raised, the shade will fold on itself from the back.

We recommend mounting custom roman shades for the bedroom on the wall. They will let less light come through. Mount them 5″ above the frame, and go at least 1″ past the molding left and right. This minimizes the light coming through the sides.
